the Beatitudes - Blessings To You...

The "Beatitudes" are some of the foundational core teachings of Jesus found in Matthew 5. This list is often taught as a set of principles on how to live life. However that is very far removed from what they actually are. The Beatitudes go through so many of the misunderstandings about what constitutes devotion to God and what a Godly society truly looks like. 

These statements made by Jesus were not about how to be a better follower of Him. They were more like laser-guided bombs into the culture that He was preaching to. They were unexpected and completely radically countercultural. Jesus flipped traditional religion of that day on it's head and offered the listeners statements of grace, not law that were so shocking that they are in part what eventually sends Jesus to the cross. The very idea of grace and what it meant to the believer was so scandalous, so revolutionary, so dangerous to the status quo, that it led to Jesus being crucified. But to the recipients of that grace it was so shockingly refreshing and life giving that it changed everything for them.

These teachings are still as shockingly refreshing today as when Jesus preached them. That is why this month we'll be looking at these True statements Jesus made in Matthew 5. Because the shockingly refreshing and life changing Truth of God's grace is something we should absolutely long to investigate and experience today.
